Africa

The feature photo shows members of Burundi’s the Akayaze Dancing and Drumming troupe practicing in a museum compound close to Lake Tanganyika and just outside the country’s largest city of Bujumbura. These lads are a mix of orphans and former child soldiers who have been reintegrated back into society.

The quiet city street scene if of downtown Bujumbura with its buildings colored in soft pastels. The desert photo is an old one from the Sahara in 1975, when I hitchhiked south, with a friend from college, into Niger and beyond. The other photo, a market scene, if from Goma in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a city literally whose streets are largely covered in brimstone (cooled lava from a nearby volcano). Here, UN peacekeeping soldiers from Uruguay are shooting for shoes.
